I love podcasts. They have been one of the greatest additions to my life as a result of the world wide web. They have particularly made a massive difference to me because of my severe headaches due to electrosensitivity. Listening to or watching long audio/video programs on a computer is not comfortable for me (ie. It causes a lot of pain), so usually I don’t choose to do so, especially when I can quickly download podcasts to my MP3 player or phone, and listen minus the EMR and headaches associated with it.
It helps that I am interested in many, many topics, so there’s pretty much an endless amount of podcasts out there (stay tuned for my post on being a scanner!). I love to learn, so when I am in a learning phase I listen to a lot of podcasts by charismatic, knowledgeable people in whatever field I am learning about. Lately I’ve been learning about ways to make money online, so I’ve been listening to Pat Flynn’s Smart Passive Income podcasts, along with Nicole Dean and Leslie Samuel podcasts. But sometimes when I’m doing a lot of mental work anyway (like when I was writing my book), I want a complete break from learning. So I find a radio program I enjoy and I download podcasts of that. For complete escapism I love Melbourne radio comedians Hamish and Andy or Fifi and Jules, but I have to be careful not to listen to this when I’m trying to rest as I end up laughing too much (not the worst problem ever!).
Otherwise there’s always my favourite 774 ABC Melbourne radio programs, such as Richard Stubbs (again can be a laughing hazard) and The Conversation Hour with Jon Faine. But these days because of the internet there are an endless number of radio programs available as podcasts, plus a similar number of dedicated podcasts you can just search for iTunes or Stitcher. The world is our podcasting oyster!! 🙂
The times I find podcasts the most useful is when I need to rest my body but my mind doesn’t want to follow suit. Meditation enthusiasts refer to the “monkey mind”, when your mind jumps around like a naughty monkey. Without direction I would often have a monkey mind, and the things I would think about would not always serve me. I know with CFS /glandular fever fatigue I have often felt exhausted in body, but find it almost impossible to sleep as my mind is active. Focussing my attention on an uplifting podcast allows me to rest my body, while giving my mind some direction as well. I find it much easier to rest for hours doing this – and sometimes I even fall asleep!!
So what are my favourite uplifting podcasts? Here are a few to keep you going, depending on your personal interests.
1. Hamish & Andy (Hilarious Aussie boy-next-door duo, who are incredibly lovable and very witty)
2. Richard Stubbs (ABC radio host. Aussie comedian. Intelligent, funny, insightful interviews & comments on life)
3. Pat Flynn – Smart Passive Income (if you want to learn about making money on the net, he’s your man)
4. Leslie Samuel – (Become a Blogger) (Ditto above)
5. Prolific Living – Daily Interaction Podcast with Farnoosh Brock (great podcast looking at effective communication & positive living)
6. The Conversation Hour with Jon Faine (774 ABC program. Great 1 hour interviews with the famous and not-so-famous)
7. Fifi and Jules (Another great, lovable Melbourne comedy duo who always give me a great laugh)
That should get you started anyway. Let me know what your favourite radio programs or podcasts are in your part of the world in the comments section and I’ll add them to my list (or make another one!). Funny always works for me, but inspiring, positive and educational is great too.
Let me know how you go!
Keep Smiling
Louise
